(Jeffrey Strain is a digital nomad who writes about all topics related to personal finances. Visit his personal finance blogs at Saving Advice and Financial Hack for more great and sometimes surprising tips!)

Impulse buys can wipe out your monthly budget with one swipe of the credit card. At the time of purchase they seem like deals you can’t pass up, and you swear your life will be more fulfilling once you have them.

Whether on retail websites, at the supermarket, or in a showroom, big sale signs and tantalizing buy-one-get-one offers abound. With a bit of effort, it is possible to beat the marketing strategies that experts know are fooling shoppers into behaving impulsively and save money. Here are five quick tips for keeping spontaneous purchases under control.

1. Quit Going to the Mall: Going to the mall is about a lot more than just shopping these days. Mega malls now have movie theaters, food courts, and salon services, and are more like theme parks than shopping centers. Even if you think you’re going to the mall for a movie, or an ice cream, or mere window shopping with friends, chances are that you are going to end up doing (and spending) more than what you initially planned. Just don’t go. It’s far too easy to stray towards sale signs and charge just one pair of earrings or just one video game. Remember — even inexpensive impulse purchases add up.

2. Refuse to Buy Before Thoroughly Researching: When most people think of impulse purchases, they they think that they are relatively small. This is not always the case. Impulse purchases can be quite large and cost thousands of dollars. Upgrading options on a car that you are buying that you don’t really need, or buying a timeshare when on vacation. Most of the time these impulse purchases come about because the purchase is presented by a salesperson that knows the right things to say making the purchase look great without giving you the time to think through all the details and independently research the purchase before you agree. If you are presented with options that you haven’t considered before and don’t have time to do your research, wait to make the purchase another time. This can save you from having car payments that are beyond your means or suffering through a timeshare trap.

3. Stay Away from Online Retail Websites: First, they draw you in by sending emails that advertise the latest styles available on their site, or by reminding you that you have unpurchased items on your wish list. Finally you crack and visit their site, just to see if some of the items you’ve been eyeing have gone on clearance. Even though you think you are doing yourself a service by bargain hunting on your favorite websites, you’re really just playing into the online retailers’ hands. They love when you take the bait because they know there is a good chance that you’ll impulse buy their shiny products.

4. Start Tracking Your Urges: One of the first steps to controlling your urges is to recognize the behavior. Perhaps you regret impulse buys in hindsight (once you see the bills), but didn’t consider it bad or impulsive at the time. it’s important to recognize every time you even think about buying something, even if you’re just daydreaming about shopping. Write down the date of the urge and the thing you are craving. After a few weeks, not only will you be better at catching yourself in the act of lust-shopping, but you might also see a pattern in the things that most tempt you.

5. Enforce a 30-Day Waiting Period: If tracking urges works for you, it might also help to write down impulses as you have them, and in doing so, promise that you will not purchase this item until a minimum of one month has passed. After the time has elapsed and you review your urges, you might be quite pleased at how unenthusiastic you are about the potential purchases that excited you a month before. Once the thrill of the moment passes when it comes to impulse buying, those once-awesome items feel needless. If, on the other hand, you still feel the need for the item after thinking about it for the month, you can feel better about the purchase that it wasn’t simply an impulse reaction.

Impulse purchases can have huge detrimental effects to your finances whether they come in a lot of small purchases that add up or one large purchase. Taking the time to realize the situations where you buy things on impulse will go a long way to helping you avoid making these costly purchases in the future.
